The Oakland Coliseum is located where I grew up and where most of my family continues to live. The success of the Oakland A’s has always reflected the resilience, triumph, and ambitions of its residents. However, I had doubts when I heard that the A’s were planning on building a new ballpark at the Port of Oakland with funding from taxpayers. Proprietors and developers often tout stadiums as a way to increase the revenue of a city— more jobs, more tourists, more visibility. However, research and case studies demonstrate that stadiums irrevocably change the housing stock, racial composition, and income demographic in a neighborhood. 

When the Houston Astrodome was built in the 1970’s, it was dubbed The 8th Wonder of the World. It reflected the success of the space program— a futuristic stadium where year-round climate control and synthetic AstroTurf revealed the techno-colonial aspirations of private investors and the political elite. corporate stadium uses RunwayML, a software that trains AI, to create a data set using 112 publicly-funded athletic stadiums in the country. Sourced from major sport franchises including the NBA, NFL, MLB, and, NHL, these generative images emphasize the convergence of digital technology, humanitarian structures, and market forces.
